Optimizing power supply to aeronautical equipment

Our ETRI High-Performance 28VDC axial fans have the right characteristics for aeronautical applications. Voltage is a key factor in optimizing the power supply of on-board electrical equipment.

The number and weight of components is multiplied by the growing number of technologies used in aeronautics. To avoid overloading aircraft, it is important to optimize the weight of each component.

The use of 28VDC is a way of reducing the weight of power supply components for multiple on-board devices:

• On-board DC/DC power converters are lighter than AC/AC converters

• Electrical and electronic devices operating at 28VDC require half as much current in the wiring as at 12VDC for equivalent power.

This enables a multitude of on-board devices to be used: LCD displays, on-board radar, power electronics, converters, inverters, on-board computers, cockpit de-icing, small HVAC evaporator and compressor units, sensitive electronic systems.

To prevent overheating and fires, all these devices need to be cooled. The use of axial fans helps dissipate the heat generated by electrical and electronic devices. These have to be compact and lightweight to fit into the compact space of airplanes and helicopters.

In addition, electronic and electrical equipment on board aircraft can be subject to voltage transients (short-term surges of electrical energy).

Fans must therefore meet a number of criteria to cool electronic and electrical components, including:

• Weight

• Compactness

• Power supply 28VDC

• Protection against voltage transients.

ETRI 28VDC axial fans have the features to meet these requirements, as they are:

• Powered by 28VDC

• Protected against voltage transients up to 80V

• Designed to work in severe environments: they are tropicalized, protected against salt spray, shocks and vibrations.

Depending on the specific needs of each application, the characteristics of our ETRI axial fans for aerospace can be adapted. We can adapt:

• Working temperatures

• Fans rotation speeds

• Leads output to add alarms or tachometers

• IP levels

• Leads output can be replaced by terminals

The 103D, 80D, 121D, 146D, 158D, 99YW and 125YG are our ETRI axial fan families available in 28VDC.
