Screening metal powders

KRN Alloys enhances metal powder quality and reduces processing time with Finex Ultima™

KRN Alloys increases product quality and reduces reprocessing time using the Finex Ultima™
KRN Alloys is India’s fourth largest supplier of metal powder, producing up to 18% of all metal powder manufactured in the country. Based in Rajkot, the manufacturer is part of the KRN Group of businesses, which includes two steel plants producing 30000 metric tons per month.

The manufacturer produces all types of metal powder, both ferrous and non-ferrous. It supplies powders for high-performance components in a variety of industries, including automotive, aerospace, electronics, paints, diamond tools, textiles, and medical devices.

The manufacturer has three production lines for ferrous, non-ferrous, and special alloys. Screening is critical in powder production because each customer segment has different size requirements. As a result, KRN Alloys must ensure the powder is separated into appropriate fractions.

With KRN Alloys’ previous screening machine, a significant proportion of the powder was removed as oversize and required regular reprocessing to create the required fractions. This additional activity increased the production lead time for powder and reduced the manufacturer’s overall efficiency.

After contacting Russell Finex for help to improve its metal powder screening process, the manufacturer implemented the Finex Ultima™ for its ferrous metal powder production.

With the Finex Ultima™ installed in the ferrous powder production line, KRN Alloys’ throughput has increased. It can now grade the metal powder in up to five particle size fractions in one pass. The screening technology has reduced the need for reprocessing and allowed the manufacturer to meet its customers’ powder specifications more efficiently.

In addition to the improvements in productivity, KRN Alloys has seen its product quality increase because there is less product handling for reprocessing. The metal powder producer has also benefited from ongoing training and knowledge transfer delivered by the Russell Finex team.
