Community College uses the Russell Liquid Solid Separator™ to expand whiskey production

Innovation and excellence in the training of craft brewers and distillers

South Puget Sound Community College (SPSCC) has been at the forefront of brewing education since launching its Craft Brewing and Distilling program in 2018, the only program of its kind in the nation. Each year, 20 students enroll, with up to 85% finding careers in the industry as lead brewers and distillers.

The program produces beer, cider, and a wide range of spirits. Beyond its educational mission, SPSCC has established an LLC to distribute and sell its products throughout Washington state, generating revenue that supports the college.

In the early stages, the program focused on beers and clear spirits. However, the college were eager to broaden their offerings to include darker spirits like bourbon and rye whiskey. To achieve the rich, clean flavors desired in these spirits, the grain must be removed before fermentation. But SPSCC lacked the necessary equipment to expand and perform this crucial separation.

To find a solution, the college consulted two local distilleries. Both relied on the Russell Liquid Solid Separator™, a high-performance centrifugal separator that efficiently removes grain solids from liquid prior to fermentation. Impressed by its capabilities, SPSCC integrated the same system into its program.

The Russell Liquid Solid Separator™ streamlines the grain removal process by separating solids from liquid slurries using centrifugal force. Fully enclosed and easy to operate, the system enhances safety and reduces operator involvement while maintaining high throughput.

Benefits:

- Enables off-grain fermentation for improved spirit quality

- Increases liquid yield due to drier grain separation

- Reduces waste disposal costs by lowering moisture content in spent grain

- Fully enclosed system enhances operator safety and ease of use

With the addition of the Russell Liquid Solid Separator™, SPSCC is well-positioned to expand its offerings, elevate its student experience, and continue innovating in the craft distilling industry.
