Offshore platform revamp for energy transition projects

Integrated structural monitoring system (SMS) for real time asset integrity control and operative life extension certification

Solgeo is eager to present its SMS package, an integrated structural monitoring system for offshore platforms. Its hallmark is the integration of different sensors real-time measurements (some manufactured by Solgeo) in a single system which process and interpret the input providing a comprehensive and unique evaluation of the structural health in view of life extension certification and re use for energy transition scopes.

The different sensor networks, including accelerometers, strain gauges, weather station, wave radar, geodetic unit, and seismic station, guarantee that both global and local key monitoring tasks are efficiently recorded.

The key results from the accelerometric network providing dynamic response and vibration modes identification are integrated with displacement sensors, which provide essential information on static deflection of the structure. The presence of weather stations or wave radar allows for precise detection of the rate of environmental excitations, hence allowing to correlate weather conditions and structural response. Finally, the alarm service, covering all monitoring activity, proved its efficiency in ensuring the safety on the structure.

Solgeo case histories performed over more than five years on various offshore platforms quite different to each other in terms of structural characteristics, required monitoring tasks and environmental context, confirm the effectiveness of the monitoring system for asset integrity verification and structural model updating.

The integrated, thorough approach of the proposed system represents an improved solution for a wide range of important tasks, such as evaluation of asset integrity, structural model update, digital twin. The so obtained upgraded structural knowledge is a pillar for offshore installation life extension certification, which is a crucial achievement in view of offshore platform re-use for energy transition projects such as CCS and H2US.
