ASTM D7869 Xenon Lamp Exposure test for Automotive exterior materials

Sonacme Xenon Aging Test Chamber

Our SONACME supply xenon aging test chambers which are suitable for ASTM D7869 xenon arc lamp exposure testing for enhanced light and water exposure testing of traffic coatings. First published in 2013, the standard is intended to replace and improve SAE J2527, a performance standard for accelerated exposure of automotive exterior materials using devices such as controlled irradiance xenon arc.

ASTM D7869 is based on ASTM G155 and is the result of a decade of research by leaders in the automotive, aerospace, coatings and burn-in testing industries. This practice is considered a better way to simulate than older testing methods and practices, so it is gaining momentum.

ASTM D7869 provides three classes:

The filter system has tighter tolerances, especially for short-wavelength ultraviolet light, which has a profound impact on polymer degradation;

It is very close reproduction of subtropical humidity variations;

It is very close reproduction of subtropical temperature variations, including rapid thermal cycling;

ASTM D7869 allows for the reproduction of many critical mechanical failures in the laboratory, including color changes, gloss loss, photooxidation, and delamination.

Our Sonacme accelerated UV aging technology includes operating procedures using controlled irradiance xenon arc lamps and water equipment. The combination of the tube and filter produces ultraviolet and visible light irradiance similar to that of sunlight, while also mimicking the water absorption and stress cycling of the automotive exterior coating under natural conditions. This accelerated aging also applies to the conditions endured by vehicles such as aircraft, trucks and rail cars.

ASTM D7869 is used to simulate the physical and environmental stresses that coatings for external transportation applications such as automobiles are subjected to in the subtropical climate of South Florida. This climate causes the deterioration of such coatings to be particularly severe, as prolonged water exposure and dry/wet cycles are particularly important for this deterioration, see coating tests, and high doses of solar radiation measured by UV tests.

ASTM D7869 test benefits and features

1.Xenon lamp based exposure technology: ASTM D7869 uses xenon lamp as a light source to simulate sunlight to ensure the authenticity and repeatability of the test.

2. Evaluate the weather resistance of the material: The test estimates the life of the material in the outdoor environment by calculating the exposure time, so as to evaluate its weather resistance.

3. Multiple test conditions: ASTM D7869 can be set to different xenon lamp radiation intensity, temperature and humidity conditions to simulate the climate environment in different regions and seasons.

4. Evaluation of surface properties: In addition to weather resistance, ASTM D7869 can also evaluate the properties of materials in terms of color, surface cracking, maintenance, and more.

5. Provide quantitative data: Test results are presented in the form of quantitative data on physical or chemical properties to provide scientific basis for material development and product design.

ASTM D7869 Xenon exposure test for automotive exterior trim materials is an important tool for evaluating the performance of automotive exterior trim materials. Our Sonacme self-developed and manufactured xenon lamp aging test chamber simulates the exposure process under different climatic conditions, which helps manufacturers and designers ensure the quality and durability of automotive exterior materials.
