5 ADVANTAGES OF GS1 DIGITAL LINK THAT YOU DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT
UBS explains what GS1 Digital Link technology is, the main advantages and the differences between 1D and 2D codes.
WHAT IS GS1 DIGITAL LINK TECHNOLOGY?
GS1 Digital Link is a technology developed by GS1 that connects physical products with digital information and online services using a barcode or QR code. These codes can be either 1D or 2D, the difference is explained below.
5 ADVANTAGES OF GS1 DIGITAL LINK THAT YOU DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT
GS1 Digital Link has many advantages but without a doubt the most striking are:
- Improved corporate image: The use of this technology improves sustainability, resulting in an improvement of your CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility).
- More traceability: It increases the tracking information that you can include in your product.
- More accessibility: The GS1 Digital Link code can be read by any device connected to the internet, including mobiles, tablets and computers.
- More flexibility: It is a unique and global identifier so it can be connected to other sources of information such as, images, videos, docs or web pages.
- More information: A conventional 2D code has a limited storage capacity. The GS1 Digital Link code allows you to include more information than conventional codes, adding characteristics such as identity and manufacturer information, expiration date of the product or others.
MAIN DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A 1D AND 2D CODE
The main difference between a 1D barcode and a 2D code is the amount of information they can contain. A 1D code can only store information in one dimension, while a 2D code can store information in two dimensions.
1D codes are cheaper and can be read by less sophisticated readers, which is why these codes are still widely used for product identification and traceability on production lines.
