How can we improve air quality in homes?

Continuous monitoring will help you know when to ventilate.

We consider our home to be a refuge, a safe space where we relax, rest and protect ourselves from the outside world. We strive to make it comfortable and clean, but we often overlook the most basic factor for our health: the quality of the air we breathe within its walls. Paradoxically, the concentration of certain pollutants can be up to five times higher indoors than outside, turning our sanctuary into an invisible source of health problems.

The sources of this pollution are everyday activities and products. When cooking, especially on gas cookers or when frying, we release fine particles (PM2.5) and gases such as nitrogen dioxide. Cleaning products, air fresheners, scented candles and even new furniture emit large amounts of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), chemicals that can cause anything from throat irritation and headaches to more serious long-term problems. The simple act of breathing in a poorly ventilated room triggers CO₂ levels, causing fatigue and lack of concentration. And we mustn't forget humidity, which, if left unchecked, can lead to the growth of mould, a powerful allergen.

When faced with an invisible enemy, the only possible strategy is to make it visible. We cannot improve what we cannot measure. Therefore, the first step in taking control of our environment is to use an indoor air quality monitor. These devices, which are now simple and affordable, act as a ‘whistleblower’ that tells us in real time what is happening in our air. They measure key parameters — PM2.5, CO₂, VOCs and humidity — and show us through their readings how our daily actions impact our environment.

Having this information gives us the power to act. An air quality monitor teaches us when is the best time to ventilate, shows us the importance of using the extractor fan when cooking, and alerts us if a new cleaning product is emitting too many chemicals. Stopping guessing and starting to measure is the most effective way to transform our home into a truly healthy environment and ensure that our personal refuge is, in fact, the safest place for us and our family.
