The importance of monitoring air quality at airports

Provides optimal environmental conditions for passengers and workers.

The environmental management of an airport is an extraordinarily complex operation that goes far beyond the four walls of the passenger terminal. As key infrastructures for global mobility, airports are also significant sources of pollutant emissions and noise, the impact of which must be rigorously controlled to ensure the protection of the environment and the health of nearby populations. The main source of environmental concern is aircraft operations: engines, both during take-off and landing and during manoeuvres on the runway, emit particulate matter, nitrogen oxides (NOx) and other polluting gases into the atmosphere.

Added to this main source are emissions from airport-related road traffic (taxis, buses, private vehicles) and ground support equipment. To manage this impact, it is essential to deploy a perimeter network of air quality monitoring stations. These technological sentinels, equipped with gas and particle sensors, continuously measure pollutant emissions in the vicinity of the airport, allowing for the assessment of compliance with legal limits and the activation of action plans in case of exceedances.

At the same time, noise is another major source of environmental impact. The roar of aircraft engines is a constant source of annoyance for neighbouring communities. For this reason, regulations require the installation of a network of sound level meters at strategic points around the airport. These devices continuously record noise levels, allowing the authorities to verify that airlines are complying with flight paths designed to minimise noise pollution over populated areas. In short, environmental monitoring at an airport is an exercise in transparency and responsibility, which is key to making aviation compatible with the well-being of its surroundings.
