Flat die thread rolling

A method of thread forming

Flat die thread rolling is a common thread forming process, mainly used for mass production of external threads, especially for the processing of fasteners such as bolts and screws. It applies pressure to the workpiece through two parallel thread rolling plates (or flat dies) to press the thread shape onto the workpiece surface.

Working principle of flat die thread rolling:

1. Parallel thread rolling plates: Flat die thread rolling machines usually consist of two parallel thread rolling plates, one fixed and one moving.

2. Workpiece passes through the flat die: The workpiece (usually cylindrical) passes between the fixed plate and the moving plate. As the moving plate moves back and forth, the workpiece is subjected to strong pressure, the metal is squeezed and plastically deformed, and the thread is formed.

3. Cold forming: Flat die thread rolling is usually carried out at room temperature, which is a cold forming process. During the pressing process, the metal fibers will not be cut off, so the formed thread has higher strength and wear resistance.

Advantages:

1. High production efficiency: Flat die thread rolling is suitable for mass production and has a fast forming speed.

2. Good thread quality: The thread forming precision is high, the surface is smooth, and the thread strength is high.

3. High material utilization rate: Since it is a cold forming process, there is no material removal, the material utilization rate is high, and waste is reduced.

4. Suitable for large diameter threads: This process is particularly suitable for forming threads with larger diameters.

Flat die thread rolling is widely used in the production of standard bolts, screws and other fasteners, especially in the automotive, construction and machinery industries. Compared with cutting threads, flat die thread rolling has obvious efficiency and cost advantages in mass production, and the formed threads are also more durable.
