Beyond the Pitch: Three-Phase LoRaWAN Metering for Smarter European Campsites

IVY EM514012 extends wireless campsite energy management from individual pitches to three-phase shared facilities, with EU868 LoRaWAN, RS485, remote relay control and prepaid/postpaid operation.

Europe’s camping and caravanning market continues to operate at significant scale: Eurostat recorded 413 million nights at campsites, RV parks and trailer parks in 2025. For operators, the energy challenge is not limited to individual pitches. Shared kitchens, sanitary buildings, laundries, leisure facilities, workshops and other common-area loads can require higher-capacity three-phase distribution and the same level of visibility as guest connections.

This creates a natural next step for wireless metering. After single-phase LoRaWAN meters are used at individual pitches or cabins, three-phase meters can extend the same network architecture to larger shared circuits without adding dedicated communication wiring across the site.

IVY METERING’s new EM514012 is a three-phase four-wire DIN-rail smart meter designed for this type of distributed energy management. It supports EU868 LoRaWAN for remote communication and RS485 Modbus for local integration, while measuring forward and reverse energy, voltage, current, power, frequency, power factor and demand. The meter is rated for 3×230/400 V and up to 100 A, with Class B accuracy.

A built-in holding relay adds a control layer to the measurement function. Operators can remotely switch the circuit through LoRaWAN, configure overcurrent cut-off and recovery, and use prepaid or postpaid operating modes. Alarm functions and event records can also support day-to-day operation by capturing conditions such as overcurrent, overvoltage, frequency deviation, power outages and low balance.

For a campsite, the practical value is integration. A single LoRaWAN network can cover both individual single-phase points and larger three-phase service loads, giving operators a more complete view of electricity use across the site. EM514012 therefore complements pitch-level metering by bringing wireless monitoring and remote control to the parts of the campsite where power demand is higher and operational access is less convenient.
