As Europe Rethinks Electricity Pricing, Wi-Fi Sub-Metering Brings Energy Use into Focus
IVY EM114084-01 combines 60 A direct-connected metering, bidirectional energy measurement, Wi-Fi Modbus TCP and relay-based load control for connected homes and small commercial sites.
Europe’s electricity market is becoming more flexible. Under revised EU electricity market rules applicable from July 2026, consumers have stronger rights to choose between fixed-price and dynamic-price contracts. Yet flexibility requires more than a different tariff: households and small businesses also need a clearer picture of when and where they consume electricity.
The challenge is still significant. ACER’s 2026 retail market monitoring finds that only 7% of EU households are on dynamic-price contracts. For many consumers, understanding everyday load patterns is the practical first step before they can make informed decisions about shifting energy use.
IVY METERING’s EM114084-01 is a single-phase Wi-Fi energy meter designed for local monitoring and load management. Rated at 230 V and 5(60) A, it provides Class 1 measurement, forward and reverse energy readings, and Wi-Fi communication with Modbus TCP support. Bluetooth-assisted Wi-Fi setup simplifies initial network configuration.
Its built-in magnetic latching relay enables remote on/off control and supports overcurrent disconnection. Prepayment and balance-management functions offer an additional option for managed accommodation, small shops or shared facilities. For homes with rooftop solar, bidirectional measurement can distinguish energy imported from and exported to the grid.
Through compatible gateways or software, these readings can contribute to dashboards that reveal consumption trends and help users review how electricity use changes across the day. The meter does not, by itself, automate dynamic-tariff optimisation or replace a utility-approved billing meter; those functions depend on the wider system, tariff contract and local requirements.
As European energy customers gain more pricing choices, visibility at the circuit or premises level is becoming increasingly useful. With compact direct connection, networked data access and integrated load control, EM114084-01 offers installers and system integrators a practical component for smarter everyday electricity management.
