Brushless motors VS Stepper motors, which one to choose for high-performance CNC?

At KMSYSTEM, we develop all our machines in-house, from start to finish. After extensive research and testing in real-life conditions, we chose a combination of Brushless and Stepper motors, each adapted to a specific application. Here's why!

Our digital machines are designed to adapt to both simple needs and specific requests, sometimes requiring a completely customized design. This versatility enables us to operate in a wide variety of sectors, sometimes with very strict requirements in terms of precision, repeatability and finishing.

With this in mind, the choice of motorization is crucial. There were two main technologies to choose from:

- Brushless motors, renowned for their efficiency, reliability and high-speed performance.
- Stepper motors, appreciated for their ease of operation and precision at low speeds.

Each of these solutions offers specific advantages for certain applications. Here's a comparative overview.

Brushless motors (BLDC)

1. Brushless motors offer greater energy efficiency, reducing power consumption by up to 15 times compared with conventional motors.
2. The absence of brushes eliminates mechanical wear due to friction, increasing reliability and reducing maintenance requirements.
3.They maintain high, constant torque and efficiency at both low and high speeds.
4. Their compact size makes them easy to fit into tight spaces, making them ideal for our custom-built machines.

Stepper motors

1. Stepper motors offer precise motion control, enabling incremental movement without the need for position sensors.
2. These motors can be precisely controlled to achieve the desired motion and positioning. Combined with suitable microcontrollers and drivers, they offer excellent open-loop control.
3. Stepper motors perform well at low speeds, but can lose efficiency at high speeds.
4. They consume energy only when actively moving or generating torque, reducing overall energy consumption.

Our choice at KMSYSTEM

At KMSYSTEM, our priority is to guarantee performance, precision and reliability on all our CNC machines. This is why we have opted for a combination of two technologies:

- Brushless motors on X, Y and Z linear axes, to guarantee high travel speed, constant precision and responsiveness, even on long or complex strokes.
- Stepper motors with encoders on rotary axes (4ᵉ and 5ᵉ axes), which offer an excellent compromise between positioning accuracy, simplicity of control and safety, notably thanks to loss-of-step detection.

This hybrid choice enables us to offer machines that are both high-performance, adaptable and robust, capable of responding to the most varied applications - from simple machining to the manufacture of complex technical parts.
