When a compressor motor failed at a Swedish specialty paper mill, Menzel Elektromotoren delivered the urgently needed replacement drive: a 4-pole squirrel cage motor with 710 kW, 6000 V rated voltage and a speed of 1489 min-¹ in IC411, IP55. The original motor was a custom-made unit of a different brand that was no longer available. Menzel therefore modified a stock motor prior to shipment to match the B35 design of the original. This meant construction and installation of a flange as well as manufacturing a mounting option to accommodate a support foot.

In addition, the shaft had to be turned down to 110x210 mm. Menzel engineers carried out the modifications within a week, allowing for a quick replacement of the old motor. MENZEL have delivered a squirrel cage asynchronous motor to a customer that operates a process-relevant air separator in one of Argentina’s largest steel mills. Designed strictly according to customer specifications, the new motor reaches a 10,000 kW performance and a speed of 1,500 min-1. It will replace an original unit that has been in use for fifteen years. The customer wished to prepare a new unit for installation and to overhaul the existing machine before storing it as a spare unit. This required 100% mechanical and electrical compatibility, for example the new motor had to feature identical mounting dimensions, and the same particular inrush current of less than 450%, also all connections (main terminal box, cooling water, oil supply for plain bearings, various auxiliary terminal boxes) had to be in the exact same position to enable a quick changeover.

For a North-African cement plant, Menzel Elektromotoren have engineered and delivered different new motors, the largest being a 6-pole size 800 slip-ring motor with 4,800 kW rated power, 11,000 V rated voltage and a speed of 992 min-1. Because the customer wanted to retain the old starter for this motor, the new motor needed to feature completely identical rotor data. In addition, the customer requested a hydrostatic bearing for the motor. The high-pressure lubrication was to ensure that the rotor “floats” on an oil film even at low speeds or during complete standstill. Even though the timeframe for manufacture of such a large motor is often tight, Menzel is able to deliver on time. Customers can come to Berlin to see their motors tested in Menzel's in-house load-test-field, where the motor specialist has recently installed a second 9x3 meter test field.
