Key Comparisons of Yarn-Covered, Silk-Covered, Film-Covered, and Enameled Wires

In transformer and reactor manufacturing, insulated wire selection directly impacts performance and reliability. Here are the core features and applications of four common types:

1.Enameled Wire:
The most widely used, with thin polymer varnish layers (0.02–0.1 mm), heat resistance up to 220°C, and dielectric strength of 5–10 kV/mm. Its advantages include high space efficiency, flexibility, and cost-effectiveness, making it the top choice for small-to-medium transformers and motor windings, especially in high-power-density scenarios.

2.Yarn-Covered Wire:
Wrapped with cotton yarn (0.2–0.5 mm), it boasts superior corona resistance (30–50% higher corona inception voltage than enameled wire) and vibration resistance, with excellent heat dissipation (reducing winding temperature by 15–20°C). However, its thick insulation increases bulk and moisture absorption, limiting it to high-voltage testing equipment, mining machinery, and other high-vibration environments.

3.Silk-Covered Wire:
Insulated with natural or synthetic silk fibers (0.1–0.3 mm), it features minimal dielectric loss (tanδ < 0.01) and stable high-frequency performance, making it ideal for RF coils and precision instruments. Its micro-fiber structure allows precise capacitance tuning, but its high cost restricts it to premium electronics.

4.Film-Covered Wire:
Polymer film insulation (0.05–0.2 mm) delivers exceptional performance: heat resistance up to 250°C, dielectric strength of 15 kV/mm (3× that of enameled wire), and ultra-low dielectric loss. With nano-modifications and multi-layer designs, it meets demands in electric vehicles, aerospace, and other extreme environments, though costs 2–5× more than enameled wire.

Selection Tips:
General Use: Enameled wire (best cost-performance).
High-Frequency/High-Voltage: Yarn-covered or silk-covered wire (specialized needs).
Extreme Conditions: Film-covered wire (high reliability).
