A Smooth Upgrade in Infrared Gas Detection
How a BaF₂-Window IR Emitter Helped Win a Tough Retrofit
In industrial gas detection, real performance is rarely about a single component. That’s why a major South Korean gas detection manufacturer approached Micro-Hybrid with a clear goal: replace the incumbent infrared emitter inside an established explosion-proof IR gas detector platform, without changing the overall architecture or compromising qualification constraints.
The detector concept paired our JSIR 350-4 emitter, TO39 with reflector and BaF₂ window, with a third-party pyroelectric detector. The incumbent emitter had been functional but presented design weaknesses due to a quasi-sealed construction. Over time, this allowed slow gas exchange between the environment and the emitter housing, leading to quality and lifetime issues in demanding industrial conditions. The manufacturer needed a technically superior solution that could deliver long-term stability and performance in the field - while remaining a drop-in fit within the existing detector design.
After evaluation and validation in the OEM’s configuration, our emitter proved itself as a direct upgrade. The BaF₂ window ensured stable IR transmission in the relevant spectral bands, and the emitter maintained full compatibility with the existing detector electronics and optics. The properly sealed construction eliminated the internal gas exchange effect, resulting in improved reliability and consistent signal performance over time.
This successful retrofit did more than solve a technical problem. It opened the door to a broader collaboration, with thousands of emitters now supplied annually for this detector platform. For more than three years, this partnership has demonstrated how a robust emitter design can enable long-term platform stability and sustained customer confidence in a highly competitive market.
Today, the same detector platform operates in some of the most demanding semiconductor manufacturing environments in South Korea. The key takeaway is straightforward: a well-engineered IR emitter can unlock lasting product improvements without a full redesign - and set the stage for deeper cooperation and portfolio expansion.
If you’re refreshing an IR gas detector platform or planning a retrofit, Micro-Hybrid supports OEMs with application-driven emitter and detector selection - including window options and component matching for harsh industrial environments.
