How to Choose the Right Chain Block for Your Lifting Needs

A practical guide to choosing chain block capacity, lifting height, headroom and suspension type.

Choosing the right chain block involves more than selecting a 1 ton, 2 ton, or 5 ton model. The equipment must match the actual load, lifting height, available headroom, suspension method, operating frequency, and working environment.

Start with the maximum intended load. The chain block's Working Load Limit (WLL) must be sufficient for the load being lifted. For example, a 1,600 kg load requires a chain block with a rated capacity above 1 ton; a suitable 2 ton model would be the first standard capacity to evaluate. Selecting a much larger capacity than necessary is not always better, as higher-capacity models can also be heavier and require more installation space.

Next, determine the lifting height. A chain block may have sufficient capacity but still be unsuitable if its available lifting height cannot cover the required vertical travel. Headroom is equally important where space between the load and overhead structure is limited.

The suspension method should match how the load needs to move. A hook-suspended chain block suits fixed-position lifting, while plain or geared trolley configurations allow horizontal movement along a compatible beam.

Finally, consider how frequently the chain block will operate and where it will be used. Moisture, salt, dust, chemicals, outdoor exposure, and demanding operating cycles can all affect equipment selection and maintenance requirements. For very frequent lifting, a powered hoist may be more practical than a manually operated chain block.

A practical chain block selection therefore comes down to six questions:

How heavy is the load? How high must it travel? How much headroom is available? Does the load need horizontal movement? How often will the hoist operate? What environment will it work in?

Answer these questions before choosing the capacity and configuration, and the final chain block will be much better matched to the actual lifting task.
