How to Choose the Right Chain Sling for Your Load

A practical guide to chain sling selection based on load, WLL, grade, configuration and sling angle.

Choosing the right chain sling requires more than matching the sling to the weight of the load. A proper chain sling selection should consider the maximum load, lifting points, sling configuration, chain grade, Working Load Limit (WLL), sling angle, and working environment.

Start by determining the maximum load and the total lifting requirement. Then identify whether the application requires a single-leg, two-leg, three-leg, or four-leg sling, as well as a vertical, basket, or choker hitch. The load shape and center of gravity should also be considered to ensure the sling remains stable during lifting.

Chain grade and diameter are equally important. Grade 80 and Grade 100 alloy steel chains are commonly used for lifting applications. Grade 100 generally provides a higher WLL than Grade 80 at the same nominal diameter within comparable standardized systems. However, chain diameter alone does not determine lifting capacity. The correct diameter should be selected from the manufacturer's WLL table based on the complete sling configuration.

Sling angle can significantly affect capacity. As multi-leg sling legs move farther from vertical, tension in each leg increases. Therefore, a two-leg sling should not be selected simply by dividing the load by two. The applicable WLL must account for the actual sling angle and configuration.

The complete assembly also matters. Hooks, master links, connecting links, shortening devices, and other components must be compatible with the selected chain and have suitable rated capacities. A higher-rated chain cannot increase the capacity of a lower-rated component.

Before ordering a chain sling, confirm the load, hitch type, number of legs, sling angle, chain grade, diameter, reach, components, WLL, applicable standards, and working conditions.
