What Chain Block Capacity Do You Need?

Choose the right chain block capacity based on total suspended load, WLL and actual lifting conditions.

Choosing the correct chain block capacity starts with the maximum load you need to lift. The rated Working Load Limit (WLL) of the chain block must be sufficient for the total suspended load, not just the weight of the main item.
A simple rule is:
Required Chain Block WLL ≥ Total Suspended Load
The total suspended load may include the machine or equipment being lifted as well as chain slings, shackles, spreader beams and other below-the-hook lifting accessories.
For example, if a machine weighs 1,800 kg and the lifting accessories add another 250 kg, the total suspended load becomes 2,050 kg. A 2 ton chain block would therefore be below the required capacity, so the next suitable rated capacity should be evaluated. (TopOneChain)
Common chain block capacities include 0.5 ton, 1 ton, 1.5 ton, 2 ton, 3 ton, 5 ton, 10 ton and 20 ton, although available ratings vary between manufacturers and product series. (TopOneChain)
When comparing capacities, bigger is not automatically better. A higher-capacity chain block may also be heavier, physically larger and require more headroom and operating effort. The objective is to select a rated capacity that safely covers the intended load while remaining practical for the installation.
It is also important to avoid arbitrary oversizing rules. A 2 ton load does not automatically require a 4 ton chain block. Selection should follow the manufacturer's rated WLL, actual lifting conditions and applicable requirements. (TopOneChain)
Finally, remember that the chain block is only one part of the lifting system. The beam, trolley, suspension point, sling, shackles and other load-bearing components must also be suitable for the intended load.
The practical selection process is:
Maximum Load → Add Lifting Accessories → Calculate Total Suspended Load → Select WLL → Verify the Complete Lifting System
