How to prevent the transmission of nosocomial infections

Minimises the risk of healthcare-associated infections

Hospitals are, by definition, places of healing. However, paradoxically, they can also be sources of infections contracted during hospital stays, known as nosocomial infections or HAIs (Healthcare-Associated Infections).

These infections represent a serious global public health problem, causing increased morbidity and mortality among patients, prolonging hospital stays and driving up healthcare costs. Although the routes of transmission are varied—direct contact, contaminated surfaces—the crucial role played by air as a vehicle for pathogens is often underestimated.

The indoor environment of a hospital is a complex ecosystem where microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses and fungi can remain suspended for hours, travelling through ventilation systems and settling on surfaces or being inhaled by vulnerable patients. Areas such as operating theatres, intensive care units (ICUs) and isolation areas for immunocompromised patients are particularly critical. In these spaces, the presence of infectious bioaerosols can have fatal consequences. Prevention, therefore, cannot be limited to surface disinfection and hand hygiene; it must incorporate a robust air quality control strategy.

This strategy inevitably involves continuous monitoring. The installation of airborne particle measurement systems, for example, allows real-time detection of anomalies that could indicate a failure in filtration systems or the intrusion of contaminated air. Controlling parameters such as the differential pressure between rooms, humidity, or temperature is also vital to creating invisible barriers that prevent the spread of infectious agents.

Environmental monitoring technology thus becomes a first-rate preventive medicine tool, a silent watchdog that alerts to invisible dangers and ensures that the hospital is, above all, a safe and healing environment.
