While this makes it suitable for light exposure to water, full waterproof performance requires coatings such as PU (polyurethane), silicone, or laminates. These treatments help create a protective barrier that blocks water completely, making nylon suitable for demanding applications in both consumer and industrial environments.

Different nylon types have varying levels of water resistance. For example, Nylon 6 and Nylon 6/6 are common in outdoor gear and mechanical components, and perform well when coated. In the marine and automotive sectors, it's valued for its resistance to saltwater and engine heat. It also finds use in medical devices, electronics, and aerospace, where it protects sensitive components from moisture and corrosion.

Proper care is essential to maintain nylon’s waterproof performance. DWR treatments wear off over time and need reapplication. Cleaning should be done gently with non-abrasive cleaners to avoid damaging coatings. When stored in dry environments and periodically maintained, waterproof nylon products can offer long-lasting performance. With these enhancements, nylon becomes a versatile material for moisture-sensitive applications.
