How to Measure Circuit Breaker Contact Resistance in the Field

Start with isolation. Lockout/tagout, prove dead, ground both sides if the procedure calls for it. The breaker stays closed. You cannot measure contact resistance on an open pole.
Visual first. Pitting, discoloration, a contact that looks dry or misaligned — write it down before you clip on. A high reading with a burned face is a different problem from a high reading on a clean pole.
Wiring is four-wire Kelvin, every time. Current leads on the line and load terminals, outside. Voltage leads just inside them, straddling only the contact path. Mix that up and the number is garbage. Same mistake on a busbar joint: current on the bus either side of the splice, voltage across the splice itself. Do not park the sense clips on the current clamps.
Current: 100 A DC is the usual MV number. IEC 62271-1 floors it at 50 A. Plenty of shops run 200 A on large frames and high-current joints so the millivolt signal sits well above thermoelectric noise. Do not use a low-current ohmmeter. Eaton and almost every OEM will tell you the same thing for MCCBs — millivolt drop at a useful current, not a 1 mA beep test.
Take three readings per pole. Average them. Repeat A, B, C with the clips in the same place. Record ambient, or at least the conductor temperature, because copper and aluminum both drift with heat and you will want that later for trending.
Interpretation is comparison, not a single pass/fail. Against factory Ru: IEC routine limit is 1.2 × Ru. Against sister poles: NETA flags >50% above the lowest. A 70 / 75 / 180 µΩ set is a problem on C even if 180 still “looks small.” Causes we see on site: oxidation, loose threads, lost contact pressure, plating worn through, a joint that was never torqued.
Speed matters once you have a whole board to finish. Older sets sit on a point for ~8 seconds.
