What Is an Exhaust Insulation Blanket and How Does It Work?

How exhaust insulation blankets reduce radiant heat, protect nearby components and improve thermal management around high-temperature exhaust systems.

An exhaust insulation blanket is a removable thermal barrier designed to contain heat around exhaust pipes, manifolds, turbochargers, mufflers and other high-temperature exhaust components. Unlike rigid metal heat shields or conventional exhaust wrap, an exhaust blanket is manufactured to fit closely around the component while remaining removable for inspection and maintenance.

In industrial engines, generator sets, marine propulsion systems and heavy-duty vehicles, exhaust surfaces can reach temperatures high enough to create significant radiant heat inside confined equipment spaces. An exhaust insulation blanket helps reduce this heat transfer by surrounding the hot component with multiple layers of temperature-resistant insulation and protective fabric.

A typical exhaust blanket consists of an inner hot-face layer, a thermal insulation core and a durable outer layer. Depending on the operating temperature and environment, materials may include silica fabric, fiberglass fabric, ceramic fiber insulation, stainless steel mesh, silicone-coated fiberglass or other high-temperature textiles.

The insulation core slows heat transfer from the exhaust component to the surrounding environment. At the same time, the outer surface helps protect the insulation system against abrasion, oil contamination, vibration and mechanical wear. Properly designed exhaust insulation blankets can significantly reduce external surface temperature and radiant heat exposure around the exhaust system.

Exhaust blankets are commonly used on:

Diesel engine exhaust pipes

Generator exhaust systems

Marine engine exhaust components

Exhaust manifolds

Turbochargers

Mufflers and silencers

Exhaust elbows and flexible connections

Industrial process exhaust piping

One of the main advantages of a removable exhaust insulation blanket is its custom-fit construction. Blankets can be manufactured according to pipe diameter, component geometry, operating temperature and required insulation thickness. Fastening systems allow the blanket to be removed during maintenance and reinstalled without replacing the entire insulation system.

Compared with traditional exhaust lagging, a custom exhaust insulation blanket provides easier maintenance and better control around irregularly shaped components. Compared with a metal exhaust heat shield, the blanket provides direct insulation around the hot surface rather than relying mainly on an air gap or reflective barrier.

For engineers selecting an exhaust blanket, the most important factors include operating temperature, required surface temperature reduction, component shape, available installation space, vibration, exposure to oil or moisture and maintenance frequency.

BSTFLEX manufactures custom exhaust insulation blankets for industrial, automotive, diesel engine, generator and marine applications. Different insulation materials, outer fabrics, thicknesses, fastening systems and shapes can be developed according to drawings, dimensions, samples or operating conditions.

For applications involving high exhaust temperatures, limited installation space or nearby heat-sensitive components, a properly engineered exhaust insulation blanket provides an effective method of controlling radiant heat while maintaining access to the exhaust system for inspection and service.
