Preserve the evidence before changing the setup A clamp-on ultrasonic flow meter fault can originate in the instrument, transducers, cables, entered pipe data, coupling, mounting geometry, pipe condition, liquid, flow profile, power, or output mapping. Several causes produce the same visible symptom. Moving the sensors and changing five parameters at once may restore a n...

What Is an Ultrasonic Water Meter? An ultrasonic water meter is a flow measurement device that uses ultrasonic signals to measure water flow without mechanical moving parts in the measuring channel. Instead of relying on an impeller, piston, or turbine, it measures the time difference between ultrasonic signals traveling with and against the water flow. This measurement...

A beam angle needs a definition before it needs a number “Beam angle” is often treated as one fixed property, but a transducer does not project a cone with a hard edge. Acoustic pressure varies continuously with direction and distance. A catalogue angle may be measured between -3 dB points, -6 dB points, another threshold, or first nulls; it may describe transmit pressur...

Define the decision before choosing the test An ultrasonic transducer cannot be accepted or rejected from its frequency label alone. “40 kHz” may describe a nominal operating region, while the measured resonance, impedance, bandwidth, sensitivity, and decay depend on construction, mounting, cable, temperature, acoustic load, and test method. A useful test plan begins wit...
